Satellite internet bandwidth
When choosing your Internet Service Provider, cost is not the only factor you need to consider. Bandwidth and speed are also important considerations, and can often tip the balance one way or the other. If you want to avoid a slow internet connection, the easiest option is to choose satellite technology.
Bandwidth: a major challenge
If your home is located far from the telephone exchange, how do you overcome the slow speeds associated with switched telephone line connections or broadband bandwidth issues? Whether you’re trying to stream an online video or run your business from your computer, a slow internet connection is a real problem that nobody can afford to face. Surveys suggest that some 45% of consumers in Europe want their ISP to offer a faster connection. The answer to these demands is to switch to a satellite internet connection. As early as 2000, satellite internet speeds already stood at 33 Kbps. Today, download speeds are as high as 20 Mbps and upload speeds stand at 6 Mbps, compared with a little over 8 Mbps at best for telephone line connections. This offers a new opportunity for the 300,000 UK households who are still without high-speed broadband internet (1.5.% of the population).
How does it work?
Satellite internet technology not only offers a higher bandwidth,
unlike many other types of internet connection, satellite technology does not require a telephone line. Outgoing data are sent directly to the satellite via the satellite dish. These are then received by the Internet Service Provider, which sends the relevant incoming data directly to the customer via satellite. The days of slow internet connections, telephone bills, permanent web connections and terrestrial connections are therefore over. Everyone has experienced the frustration that comes with waiting patiently in front of a screen for files to download. The problems range from poor connectivity and network issues to geographical restrictions, particularly for telephone line connections. Although the internet is the world’s fastest communication method, technical issues such as these can be easily resolved by switching to satellite broadband – the only technology that is currently capable of covering all areas and requires no terrestrial installation.
How can I get it?
The internet has become a necessity, yet many areas of the UK still do not have access to broadband, 3G or WiMAX connections. Grants and subsidies are available to help people buy satellite connection kits (dish, modem, wiring and installation), enabling them to access high-speed satellite internet at low cost. Some city and county councils have also introduced satellite internet support mechanisms for individuals – and in some cases businesses – that are ineligible for a broadband connection. These support packages, ranging from £90 to £400 in value, are invaluable in helping people overcome the slow speeds associated with switched telephone line connections.
