How satellite internet works
ADSL is the most widespread high-speed internet technology and it is available through the telephone network. Not every home however can benefit of this technology especially those that are away from urban areas. The main advantage of satellite broadband is that it provides coverage in almost any location, overcoming the restrictions imposed by wired telecommunications networks.
How does satellite internet work?
There are two types of technology that enable users to access the internet via satellite from a terrestrial connection point. The connection may be either one-way or two-way in nature.
1) Internet connection with terrestrial transmission
This is also known as “One-way satellite internet“. This type of connection also requires a traditional telephone line. This was the first type of satellite internet technology to be deployed.
With a one-way connection, outgoing data are transmitted via the telephone line, with incoming data received from the satellite. The satellite covers a vast geographical area, providing broadband to homes that had previously not been eligible for a high-speed connection.
However, the fact that a telephone line is required to transmit outgoing data means that the bandwidth remains limited. This technology also requires an “always on” telephone connection.
For these reasons, terrestrial transmission internet connections have been on the decline in recent years, and are likely to disappear altogether in the future, to be replaced with a higher performance technology: Two-way satellite internet.
2) Two-way satellite internet
This is the solution that Tooway offers. In this case, the telephone line required with one-way technology is a thing of the past. The data are no longer transmitted via a telephone line. Instead, they are sent directly to the satellite by the satellite dish. As with terrestrial transmission connections, the internet connection is always available in every location covered by the satellite. The difference, however, is that the bandwidth is much higher.
There is no terrestrial connection, as both incoming and outgoing data pass through the satellite. As such, there are no telephone line rental bills as the telephone line is removed entirely from the equation. What’s more, the internet connection is always on.
